Our Yearly Guide

When you need to find a device for yourself or for a loved one, going for one of the cheap cameras for seniors might not be the best idea, since it might lack some features that could definitely come in handy. However, this doesn’t mean that you should choose the most expensive alternative either.

The important thing here is to find that device that is best suited for what is going to be used but without spending a fortune on it. Plus, since we know that our elderly relatives love capturing moments and creating memories for a lifetime that they can later share with others, you might also want to make sure that the camera takes high-quality images.

For this reason, we’ll take a look at what the main features that can help you achieve all of the above are. This might be especially useful if you need to purchase a great gift but you are not sure where to start.

Ease of use

As you can imagine, seniors are not very used to complex technology, so it’s a good idea to look for a camera that comes with an intuitive design. If you are not sure what such a model would be like, we’ll give you some clues. An autofocus function is definitely a good idea since our elderly loved ones might be experienced in setting up a camera for capturing a family instance.

Portability is another feature that you should think about. It’s true that a smaller camera might mean that the controls are rather cramped, but being able to take it with you is more important than getting everything right on the first try. In the end, this also a matter of getting used to the device.

Sensor

Since taking high-quality images is very important when it comes to creating memories, a larger sensor can make all the difference. This especially applies if we’re talking about photos taken in low light, as it might sometimes be the case at an important family event such as a birthday party or a wedding.

In case you are wondering what resolution a decent sensor should have, anything above 18 megapixels should be able to get the job done. If you go for such a camera, the user will be able to enjoy more options when it comes to the conditions in which he or she can take the picture.

Images and videos

Since both images and videos can create beautiful memories, you might want to go for a model that can also capture videos. Here, as well, it’s a good idea to choose a device that features a larger sensor, as this defines the quality of videos and can make your loved ones happy by giving them the opportunity to take a second look at those moments they cherish.

Since ease of use plays an important part here as well, you should make sure that the camera you choose has the video recording option at the touch of a button, since seniors might not have the patience to figure out how to work the device on the spot, as the moment is taking place.

Under no stretch of the imagination could Sony DSC HX90V be included in any list of simple to use cameras. I am a youngish senior with many years of camera experience, right back to before auto focus in the pre digital film days. I have an excellent Lumix DMC TZ15 which took wonderful pictures and was easy to use, but the screen was damaged and i needed a replacement. I went to a leading camera store to buy a simple to use small camera & was talked into this little monster. I have used it twice & deeply regret this purchase. One of the selling points was the view finder, however, you can’t look through it with glasses on. I went on holiday on the Great Ocean Road & could see nothing through the viewfinder or the rear screen. Admittedly the pictures were excellent, but at the time I took the shots I couldn’t tell. The camera is really a manual camera with a couple of autofocus settings. The menu is complex and extensive, but not intuitive & I ended up with about 50 icons on the screen that I couldn’t get rid of with no idea what they meant & so small I couldn’t tell anyway. Only last night I got this little beast out to give it another go. After searching online I finally found the 200+ page manual, and after a settings reset, I hoped to start again, but very quickly ended up with all sorts of inexplicableicons on the screen & the camera set to macro, with no obvious way of changing scene modes. This purchase was a tragic disappointment. Certainly it does everything a serious photographer could want in compact form, but its definitely not an ideal recommendation for non tech-savvy seniors!!!
I am still looking for a small simple, camera. Manufacturers seem to have got so wrapped up in having all the latest functions in a camera, to the point they have forgotten that all that some people want from a camera is to be able take photos reasonable quality pictures quickly and easily.

Excellent observations. Did you find the perfect one yet? My 91-year old Mother finds it difficult to use with her arthritic fingers and we’re looking for a replacement, too. Let me know what you find.
