Last Updated: 12.06.19

If you are the type of person who likes to explore different parts of the world, then a lightweight travel wheelchair is an option that you should take into account. Getting around with the usual, heavyweight wheelchair in unfamiliar places can be quite stressful. It is easy to imagine that a lighter wheelchair will make certain aspects of your travels easier to manage.

Also, you will have to learn how to take proper care of your wheelchair, be it lightweight or heavyweight. Keeping your wheelchair in mint condition will not only increase its lifespan, but it will also help you prevent potential accidents. That is the reason we decided to offer you some cleaning and maintenance tips that we believe to be very useful.

Brakes

Proper maintenance of the brakes is notably important because it will make your wheelchair last longer. It is recommended that you check your brakes every week, but if you notice any breaking issues, you must check them right away. You should be very careful because you might damage them if they are adjusted improperly.

Moreover, if the pressure in the tires is low, it might affect the braking system. That is why you should always ask for an expert’s advice if you don’t feel confident to fix the issues yourself. In order to be able to notice if the brakes are working correctly, you need to know how they should be working in the first place.

Take your time and check to see if they are tighter or looser than usual. Why is this so important? Well, if you do notice any of these things, you should have them fixed right away because your life can be in danger.

Also, you have to make sure that the brakes are actually stopping the chair from moving. Before going out, it is recommended that you check that the brakes are no reason for you to worry about. If they don’t stop the chair in time and you don’t feel comfortable to leave the house, we suggest that you follow your instinct.

It is wiser to be careful and cautious than to be hasty and do something you may later regret. If you cannot stop the chair in time, there are many severe accidents that can happen. Your health is the most important, and whatever you need to do can wait until you are completely safe.

Tires

If your tires and inner tubes are not in good condition, your wheelchair mobility and maintenance can be affected. It is quite important to make sure that the tires are properly inflated as one of the most common causes of mobility issues is low tire pressure. This issue might not seem very dangerous, but let us tell you that it can prove to be very tiring.

So, whenever you feel like you exert far more energy to maneuver the wheelchair, especially directing or propelling it, you know for a fact that the pressure in your tires is too low. On the other hand, when the pressure is too high, there are several issues that can occur, too. We can note here the most common one, which is the risk of bursting the tube and outer tire.

If you are not sure what the right pressure range is, it is easy for you to find it in the wheelchair’s manual. If you see that your tires are not fitted correctly, the good news is that you can fit them yourself as it is a relatively simple process. If for some reason, you feel lost and you don’t know how to do it, you can check an instruction manual for fitting bicycle tires.

The process is almost the same! The inside wheel rim and inner tire need to be cleaned and then you can fit a pressurized tire tube. Also, after you fit the tire, don’t forget to check the pressure once again. Another important aspect that you have to pay maximum attention to is the way you attach the tire to the wheel.

You also need to make sure that you do this correctly so that you don’t end up damaging the rim of the tire. So, if you feel like this is not the type of task for you, it is better to bring the unit to a repair shop as people working there have far more experience. This way, you avoid experiencing any unexpected situations along the way.

Wheels

Most wheelchairs have two types of wheels – the pneumatic ones (air-filled), that are light and easy to roll, and the solid ones (foam-filled) that are more on the heavy side. With the pneumatic tires, things are simple – they just need to remain correctly inflated.

That is why it is recommended that you check the pressure on a weekly basis. So, if you notice that the pressure is not within the rated range, all you need to do is to fill them. If you were wondering how to find out what the recommended pressure range is, you should know that it can be found on the side of the tire.

The risk of getting a flat tire is amplified when tires are under-inflated which can lead to loss of control, hence various accidents. Also, when you notice that the tread is worn to about half of its original thickness, you should change the tires. When you use the chair inside, and you notice that the wheels are dirty, you can easily clean them with bicycle tire cleaner.

But, if you use the same one outdoors, things become a little more complicated. It’s not just the wheels that you need to clean, but also the wheelchair itself. No one wants to bring the dirt from outside on the indoor flooring, and the best way to prevent this from happening is to use good brand cleaners.
